Plastic credits are generated through projects that aim to tackle plastic pollution by collecting and/or recycling plastic waste from the environment. These activities generate different types of credit, and the currently available plastic credits in the market are:
Collection credits: from plastic collected from the environment or local communities.
Recycling credits: from recycling plastic waste where it would otherwise not happen.
Organizations may purchase any of these credits to offset their unavoidable plastic footprint, following their commitments and efforts to measure and reduce their plastic use. The sale of credits drives investment towards the projects that generate them. Therefore, those projects must be environmentally and socially ethical according to the best practices, including providing formal employment opportunities and improving the quality of life in a cleaner environment.
